Generac Generator Troubleshooting Guide

Is your Generac generator not running properly? Is there an indicator light you're not sure about? Check out our troubleshooting guide to help you diagnose what's happening with your generator.

Green Light  ⟾

Ready to run! Your generator should be working properly. If you have a flashing green light it means your generator is running and should be powering your house during an electrical outage, if not call us.

Yellow Light  ⟾

This is no need to worry, your generator is just letting you know that it is time for a service and oil change. Call us to get you on the schedule! If you recently had a service done, it may just need a reset to let the system know.

  • Press OFF, ENTER, AUTO Or ENTER X2. After it may ask if service was done, just keep pressing ENTER until it goes back to ready to run and a green light.

Red Light  ⟾

With any red light the first thing you want to do is a reset, just like you would with any computer system. Your warranty requires you to be able to go out to check the generator for codes and to do resets. If you are unable, ask a neighbor or relative for help. Without the reset or code, there will be a service charge for our tech’s to come out.

  • Grab your keys and unlock and lift up the lid. On the controller you will see the screen and some buttons. Press- OFF then ENTER.

  • Now you’ll want to test the generator by pressing MANUAL. If the generator starts up, let it run for about 4 minutes. Then press OFF to shut it down.

  • Now press AUTO and If the screen shows ready to run and a green light, it is good to go!

  • If it goes back to a red light, it will show you a code. Please take note of this code and call our office.

Our office staff is trained to understand these codes and it will help us figure out what is going on. Sometimes we can help you fix it over the phone. Sometimes we will have to send a tech out for a repair. This code will also let the tech know what parts to bring. Before calling our office, please make sure to have your keys and the code you got from the generator handy. Remember we are here to help in any way possible!
